For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind - 2 Timothy 1:7

I am very fortunate to be alive and in a sane mind today. During those lost years I abused my mind terribly with all the drugs I took. I am very thankful to the Lord Jesus Christ for saving me and giving me a sober mind that allows me to enjoy everything around me without the aid of mind altering drugs.

I probably took LSD 50 to 60 times during a period of four years and never had a bad trip. I remember one time when I first got home from Vietnam, after working in the apple orchards for a month or so, I drove to the Bay Area in California to visit an Army buddy from Vietnam. We ended up going to Yosemite National Park one weekend while I was there and taking LSD. I had my dog, Freak, with me. Just after taking the LSD, I was walking across a bridge and was pondering whether I should jump off the bridge into the water.

It was a really stupid thing to do, but I did it, throwing Freak off the bridge before me. Luckily we both survived the jump. When I came up out of the water, I was hallucinating like crazy. We were sitting in a meadow with a line of trees about 300 yards or so away. As I came out of the water the trees began to sing, weaving back and forth and clapping their hands. Years later I found this Scripture in the Book of Isaiah that described what I was hallucinating to a tee. It is found in the Book of Isaiah the Prophet.

For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12 (NKJV)

This was just one example of the kind of trips I would have on LSD. Another time during this same trip to the Bay Area, some friends and I went to the Billy Graham Crusade in Oakland, California, stoned on acid. We even went forward for the altar call at the end, but were so stoned we didn’t know what we were doing.

On another occasion, while taking LSD in Vietnam, I was on guard duty on one of the towers and was hallucinating that the heavens were opening up before my very eyes. I say all of this simply to reveal that many of my LSD trips had spiritual overtones because that’s where my mind was.

On another occasion we were in Madison, Wisconsin staying in a college frat house with a bunch of guys who were really into LSD. We spent acouple of hours sitting around smoking pot, telling one story after another. They were all really interested in us. We had talked about some of the LSD trips we had taken during the course of our travels. This really interested them, because they were really into LSD. They just happened to have a bunch of LSD on hand and brought it out and invited us to take some.

When I had taken LSD in the past, it was only one hit at a time. This time we all took two hits each. Once we took the LSD, Hobo and I wanted to go out on the town rather than sit around in the frat house; but they wanted to see what would happen to us as we started to get off on it. So we stuck around for a while.

I ended up in an upstairs room with a guy who was really into the whole meditation thing. We were sitting there really starting to get off on the acid, when he realized that I was meditating right along with him. He was really surprised that meditation had become so natural to me and asked me how I knew how to meditate. I told him that if he spent as much time sitting on the side of a road waiting for rides or riding on freight trains, he would understand.

Eventually, Hobo and I were on our way for the evening, but were told we could come back and crash there if we wanted to. As we were heading towards one of the bars we had checked out the day before, I thought, “What have I done?” I was really getting off on the acid and was wondering whether I had overdone it by taking two hits.

The next thing I knew, I was somehow in another frat house and everyone was either really drunk or high. I was hallucinating like crazy. I don’t even remember how I got there. In my hallucinations, I began to see that I was in a house full of demons and that I was a representative of the light, when all of a sudden the demons began to come after me, trying to harm me. I somehow escaped and found myself back on the street. I actually thought they were intent on killing me. I realized the next morning that I must have left my jacket behind, because I didn’t have it on when I finally made it back to the frat house.

I now had to somehow figure out how to get back to the frat house where Hobo and I were at earlier in the evening. I knew that if I could just get back there, I would be safe. It would always amaze me, even while on LSD, how I could sort of figure things out and find my way. I also had quite a few beers in the course of the evening, so the alcohol effect was upon me as well. I knew that if I could just find my way back to the center of town, I could probably figure out how to get to where I was going. I remember as I was trying to find my way back that, after walking a block or so, I would lean up against a building until I would get my bearings and then I would take off again.

I somehow made it back to the frat house and knocked on the door until someone finally came and let me in. Once back in the house, I found a quiet corner to just kick back while coming down off the acid. It wasn't one of my better trips, but I survived.
